Transitions

Preparing your child for school

Leaving nursery and starting school can be both exciting and daunting for a child. A positive approach is important, understanding that each child may be anxious about their forthcoming move.

We plan and work carefully with individual children in order to prepare them for a seamless transition to school. We plan activities to gently support preschoolers to become independent. We encourage children to engage in activities that build the foundation skills that will make the transition easier. For example, serving themselves at snack times, eating and socializing during snack time, using the toilet and washing their hands independently, participating in circle time activities, right through to helping create their own unique Learning Journals.

As starting school creeps closer a formal transition plan is put into place which generally starts in the term before your child starts school and includes meeting and making friends with a ‘buddy’ from Primary 6. They will mix with their buddy frequently and join them for some shared activities. Their buddy will be on hand during the first few weeks of school to help your child settle into their new class. All children who are about to start school have lots of opportunities to visit their new school/classroom and teacher and will even join the school children during playtime in the playground and mum or dad get to join them to sample a school lunch.
